Section 508 -
General
Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act requires Federal departments and agencies that make use
of electronic and information technology to "ensure that Federal employees
and members of the public with disabilities have access to and use of
information and data, comparable to that of the employees and members of the
public without disabilities". Click on the following link for
general information on Section 508.
Section 508 -
Specific
In accordance with Section
508, the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (aka the
"Access Board") has issued a set of 16 standards to which Federal web sites
must comply, for the purpose of making these web sites accessible to persons
with seeing, hearing, or other physical impairments. Final standards were
issued on 21 Dec 00, 36 CFR Part 1194.22 being the section relating to
web-based applications specifically.
Click on the following link for a full treatment of the Federal Access
Board's standards. Note that Section 508's set of standards is similar,
but not identical to, that of the
Web Accessibility Initiative
(WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium.
